Saint Francis University (Pennsylvania) is a four-year, coeducational Catholic liberal arts university in Loretto, which is a borough in Cambria County, in the US state of Pennsylvania and part of the Altoona, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area, during the 2000 census, the borough's population being estimated at a number of nearly 1200 people. Among Loretto's most notable inhabitants there is Charles Michael Schwab (18 February 1862 – 18 October 1939), who was an American steel magnate, under his leadership, Bethlehem Steel becoming the second largest steel maker in the United States, and one of the most important heavy manufacturers in the world.
Saint Francis was founded in 1847, by six Franciscan Friars, as Saint Francis College, which, in 2001, received university status and became Saint Francis University, having today, an enrollment estimated at a number of approximately 1,600 undergraduate and 600 graduate students, to whom it offers 25 undergraduate and 7 graduate majors, including a Doctor of Physical Therapy.
Saint Francis' athletic teams are known as the Red Flash, who compete in 21 men's and women's sports at the NCAA Division I level, in the Northeast Conference, including in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA), for men's volleyball. Among the sports, in which the Red Flash compete, there are: basketball, football, soccer, tennis, volleyball, swimming, lacrosse and indoor/outdoor track and field.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Maurice Stokes - Basketball player (Basketball Hall of Fame), Robert Conway - Vice Admiral United States Navy, Teresa S. Polley - President and Chief Operating Officer of the Financial Accounting Foundation, and Scott Layden - Former president and general manager of the New York Knicks NBA basketball team and former general manager of the Utah Jazz, among few others.
